A stately late 18th century Belgian, Liege, tall case clock case having a period Black Forest clock workings with wooden enameled dial and hand-painted fruit decoration, the original minute and hour hands of solid brass and the original sand filled iron weights.
The case in stunning burled walnut with gilt bronze ormolu, the door, having a round spyglass window, showing the movement of the pendulum. Has an eight day movement with a bell strike.
Cabinetmakers in Belgian cities such as Liege, began to offer goods that reflected the tastes and needs of a new class. But the strongest aesthetic statement came from the wood – richly-grained, honey-colored, often book-matched veneers of walnut and fruitwood.
