Vintage Design
This antique chest from Shandong, circa 1920, has weathered over time to result in a pared-back, rustic look that will add character to any space. Its thick top extends over three upper drawers and two wider drawers below, offering both ample storage and surface space for displaying items such as photos and ornaments. Uniquely, four of the drawers feature original ring handles, with the fifth boasting a larger, long handle.
The pastel hues paint each drawer front, wearing and fading to a subtler shade on the lower drawers. Aging has worked its charm, unifying the wood with the softened colours. Numerous years of use have texturised the top, likely from its prior incarnation as an altar for ancestral devotion. Incorporating the chest today doubles as storage in any living room, bedroom, or as a dining room sideboard.
